Contents: Propofol

Indication/Uses: Induction & maintenance of general anesth. Sedation in adult patients undergoing diagnostic procedures or surgery in conjunction w/ local or regional anesth & in ventilated adult patients under intensive care.

Dosage/Direction for Use: IV General anesth induction Titrate 20-40 mg every 10 sec. Adult <55 yr 1.5-2.5 mg/kg. Elderly, patient of ASA grade III & IV especially those w/ impaired cardiac function 1 mg/kg. Maintenance: Increments of 25-50 mg by repeated bolus inj or 4-18 mg/kg/hr by continuous infusion. Childn >1 mth 2.5 mg/kg. Maintenance: 9-15 mg/kg/hr by continuous infusion. Duration of use: Childn <3 yr 20 min. Max: 75 min. Adult Sedation during intensive care 0.3-4 mg/kg/hr by continuous infusion. Sedation for diagnostic & surgical procedure 0.5-1 mg/kg over 1-5 min. Maintenance: 1.5-4.5 mg/kg/hr infusion. May be supplemented by 10-20 mg bolus inj.

Special Precaution: Cardiac, resp, kidney or liver disease; hypovolemic, debilitated or epileptic patients; ophth surgery; electroconvulsive therapy; severe cardiac impairment; high intracranial pressure & low arterial pressure; hereditary acute porphyria; obese & those receiving TPN. Consider IV administration of anticholinergic agent before induction or during maintenance of anesth in an increased risk of relative vagotonia. Disorders of fat metabolism or diseases requiring restrictive use of lipid emulsions. Monitor lipids in ICU treatment after 3 days. May impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Infants & children up to 5 yr.

Adverse Reactions: Hypotension, transient apnea; coughing; pulmonary edema, asystole, bradycardia, convulsions.
